Exclusive Interview with DJ Miguel Serra aka IOSUPASTAR
10 Essential Questions
1. For listeners who might be discovering you for the first time, how would you describe who you are as an artist and the sound you bring to the scene?
I am an artist who has always remained very true to my roots and musical identity. Although I have evolved overtime, I have never lost my essence.
My sound brings a pure vision of house music, staying faithful to its roots while absorbing modern influences without ever losing authenticity.
2. What originally inspired you to start DJing and producing music? Was there a specific moment or influence that pushed you into this world?
My connection with music started very early, buying records at the age of 10 or 11. I began DJing in a pub where a relative worked, and that’s where I developed my passion, playing my first gig at 17. Later, as an international DJ manager, I was involved in creative processes that sparked my interest in production, which led me to start producing with my project 2 Brothers of Soul.
3. Your style blends soulful, deep, and funky house. What draws you to these genres, and how do you keep your sound fresh?
What attracts me to these genres is their purity, elegance, and musicality. They are very melodic, timeless styles that connect with both purist audiences and more general listeners. I keep my sound fresh by subtly adapting to new influences while always respecting the essence that defines my musical identity.
4. Can you walk us through your creative process? How does a track or remix usually begin for you?
My creative process usually starts very spontaneously, often with an idea that comes at any moment. Almost always, a melody comes to my mind first, and that is what I immediately capture. From there, I start building the base and developing the track. When it comes to remixes, I need the original track to inspire me, if it does, ideas flow quickly and I build from that point.
5. You’ve worked under different aliases and collaborated with various artists. How do these projects shape your identity as IOSUPASTAR?
I am quite an eclectic artist, open to different musical styles. This directly influences my identity as IOSUPASTAR, as I adapt my sound depending on the moment, the crowd, and the energy of the venue, moving between different styles without losing coherence.
6. What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far—a performance, a collaboration, or something unexpected?
I’ve experienced very special moments, such as playing at Pacha Ibiza alongside Erick Morillo, or a session in Spain that lasted six hours with percussionist Manu Idhra and Darren James Bell, under his alias Sandra Love, creating an incredible connection with the audience. As a producer, one of the most important moments was my remix for Gloria Gaynor.
7. The electronic music scene evolves constantly. How do you stay connected to what’s new while staying true to your signature sound?
My essence has always been the same, but I remain open to new influences. I incorporate small elements from current trends, allowing me to evolve without losing my identity.
8. If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, past or present, who would it be and why?
I have always said Michael Jackson and Prince. I almost had the chance to collaborate with Prince, and I have always been a huge fan of both.
9. What can fans expect from you in the coming months? Any new releases, remixes, or shows you’re excited about?
In the coming months, I will relaunch my label HOM Recordings, along with an album I have been working on for several years. I also have eight tracks ready or nearly finished that will be released soon.
10. Finally, what message would you like to leave for the listeners tuning in today?
I would encourage people to keep an open mind and not limit themselves to one style. Every genre has something valuable, and staying open allows you to grow both musically and personally.
